I had been a centimeter dilated for 2 weeks, so I got a Foley catheter/balloon inserted on Sunday which helped me dilate to 4 centimeters by the next morning when I checked in to be induced with petocin. Progress was very slow, so they upped the petocin, I waited to get an epidural and experienced pretty severe labor pains until I decided to get the epidural at 4 pm, labored down at midnight then FINALLY started pushing at 3 am and kept going til about 6 am. My doc and all the nurses were very impressed with my pushing and my endurance, I think it's because I am a singer- in fact in between pushing I said, "This is NOTHING, you should be in a dress rehearsal with Karen P. Thomas, now that takes stamina!" After 3 hours of pushing, I told the doc I could have gone another 1/2 an hour, but she said that if he hasn't come by now with all of this great pushing, then its nature's way of saying he is too big for my pelvis.
The most traumatic time was the moment I signed off to do the C-section, within 5 minutes there were about 6 nurses/docs in the room moving at an Emergency room pace, which was such a scary, frantic jumble of people surrounding me pulling out tubes, putting in tubes, moving me to the gurney etc... I just started crying from the sudden change of energy/the unknown and I didn't stop crying until I finally got to see my little guy for the first time. The doc said "No WONDER you couldn't get this baby out, his head is 15 inches around!"
Overall, I certainly don't regret how things went, I am so grateful that Jack is healthy and that I live in a society where a C-section is possible.
