Hah! Hah! You knew we would talk about this at some point!
We have been "ECing" with Jack for about a month now. EC is Elemination Communication, that's right... communicating with your baby through verbal cues for pee and poop. Our goal was to make a sound for peeing (pssssss) and another for pooping (grunt) so that Jack will associate the sensation with the sound.
Apparently, this is widely practiced in China and India starting at birth. The theory is that babies have an instinct to not soil themselves and that that instinct is eventually lost by our Western methods of letting them pee and poop in their diaper.
We figured we would just do it part time and see how it goes...
We started out by laying him (naked) on some towels once a day for 10 minutes, playing with him like usual, when he pees, we make the sound psssss. We noticed he tended to pee about 5 minutes after a feeding. Once we established this, we would put him on his towel in the morning-pssssss, then put him on his potty chair at night after a feeding, cueing him with the psssss sound. We did this for a few days, nothing came of peeing on the potty, in fact one day, I did this routine, and he pooped on the potty! That was a surprise!
Last Monday, I did the same routine, and ta-da! He peed on the potty!!! The next day, I wanted to see if it was just a fluke, so I cued him on the potty after every feeding and he peed every time and this has continued through the week, 6 times a day!
We don't expect Jack to be potty "trained" at this age, we are just communicating with him to keep him aware and flexible about using the toilet. We also know we aren't getting every pee (since he still has a wet diaper later on) but its a start!
We will continue to do this, hoping to catch some poops on the potty in the future, and maybe when he gets more verbal, he can tell us he needs to go potty through the verbal cues. We will see!
Darcy,
ReplyDeleteI have heard about this, but frankly it isn't something I wanted to deal with. Kudos to you for trying though. It will be interesting to see if he potty trains sooner than most boys typically do. Keep us informed!

I'm so impressed! :)
